photo via @drinkarizonaThe ubiquitous turquoise and pink can design of Arizona 99-cent teas has been a vaporwave standard ever since Yung Lean released his 2013 video for “Hurt,” and lots of memes of sad boys holding cans of their own followed. Arizona partnered with Adidas for a line of sneakers based on the design, and announced they’d be available at a two-day NYC pop-up for the same price as a can of tea: 99 cents. The pop-up, located at 208 Bowery in NYC, was scheduled to be open from 11 AM-7 PM, July 18 and 19, but was shut down early by the NYPD in the chaos of nearly 1000 people vying for a pair of the shoes.
Police say two people were assaulted while waiting in line for the shoes: A 17-year-old girl was punched and struck with a bottle and a 15-year-old boy was punched in the face. No arrests have been made in connection to those assaults.
However, two people were taken into police custody for separate incidents: A 21-year-old man will receive a summons for flying a drone above the crowd and a 43-year-old man was arrested for disorderly conduct.
Arizona released a statement confirming the pop-up was closed permanently, and wouldn’t reopen for its scheduled hours on Friday:
